TarotKlok- XIX The Frontman by Verve-Soliloquy TarotKlok- XIX The Frontman by Verve-Soliloquy
Behold! Another TarotKlok submission! Thanks to the lovely :iconzydratelove: for the original commission that gave me the idea! This is Nathan Explosion as card XIX, originally "The Sun," now "The Frontman."

Now. There are some major points about this piece that I think everyone should know. Here they are in sequence:

:bulletblack: I do not make any profit from this project. It is purely in fun, to kill time between my two jobs, practice, and school. All character design credit, names, likenesses, trademarked symbols, the "Dethklok" name, the "Dethklok" logo, the "Metalocalypse" name, the "Metalocalypse" logo, and any future pieces or additions in terms of the above are the sole properties of [adult swim], Williams Street, Titmouse, inc, the Metalocalypse creators (Brendon Small and Tommy Blacha), and any legally affiliated parties. I do, however, claim credit for the time, effort, and actual drawing that it took to make this piece.

:bulletred: These tarot cards are part of a NON-DIVINATION DECK. I highly recommend against comparison between these cards and the major/minor arcana used by divination enthusiasts. Because I have so dramatically altered the design and symbolism of a divination tarot deck, any attempted readings could be sorely misconstrued.

:bulletblack: Most cards in this series have had their names altered. However, they still follow the specific array of trump cards, and will act much the same as their original counterparts. In this instance, trump XIX was originally "TheSun." In keeping with my theme, I have changed that to "The Frontman," Nathan's position in the band.

:bulletred: The point of the Metalocalypse-themed deck is rendered null if the entire deck does not uphold the theme. In the case of the 22 original trump cards, many cards "symbolized" (from where the divination deck readings were derived) certain positive outcomes. There were also three positive virtues in the original deck- Justice, Strength, and Temperance. I have altered all overtly positive cards to be either their polar opposite, or something overtly negative.

The next point of business is the symbolism in each card. Here is a definitive list of the utilized symbolism in card XIX:

:bulletblack: Nathan Explosion is the centerpiece, surrounded by an elaborate border that is referenced from the title card/logos of the actual show/band. His pose is very strong, a wide-legged, centered stance he often takes when performing with the band. His eyes glow green, he holds his microphone in hand, and he is pointing directly at the viewer. Nathan's eyes represent the lack of innocence he embodies. Beyond his leadership position in a band known for their debauchery and greed, Nathan has experienced death close up and personal, has killed in many ways, and likely stands to soak the world in blood before the Metalocalypse is through. His pointing is also accusatory, bringing cynicism and doubt to a once optimistic card.

:bulletred: The microphone and teal glow are key pieces of this card. In the original Sun card, the main character (the innocent infant/child) often holds an orange banner, which represents consciousness becoming subconsciousness (or a lack of need to worry and be in control of all things). Instead, I have made the glow around Nathan and the color of his microphone's "on" switch a teal blue, the opposite of orange. This means that Nathan will control everything, has often needed to control everything, and invokes a sense of worry and fear in all unfaithful mankind.

:bulletblack: The black, gold, and red color scheme represents the show's color scheme, and colors most often associated with death and dying. It's an overall macabre feeling.

:bulletred: Wreathing Nathan's head is an interpretation of the Doomstar. It acts as the Sun in this card; Nathan's nimbus, which originally represented life and fulfillment, now represents nothing but death and destruction. However, the Doomstar is still an instrument of fulfillment- just not necessarily to all mankind.

:bulletblack: The background depicts a dark red and black spiderwebbing pattern. Upon closer inspection, however, it can be discerned that the pattern is 1) actually designed to look like crocodile skin, and 2) over a blue background, instead of a black one. The crocodile skin represents Nathan's spirit familiar, as seen in Season 2. Likewise, the faint blue background represents the depths of the oceans, where Nathan's guide and telepathic connection resides.

:bulletred: Finally, there are four skulls on stakes at the bottom of the card, visible between Nathan's legs. In the original Sun card, there are four sunflowers, representing the four elements, as well as the four minor Arcana suits. They meant nourishment from the Sun. In Nathan's card, the four skulls are reminiscent of the shape of the four Hellenic alchemical element symbols, as well as 1) his four other bandmates, and 2) the starvation of the world from all things good and pure.

I appreciate feedback from non-tarot fans and players/readers alike! I intend to upload the rest of the trump cards, and then continue on with the suits. I'm particularly looking for critique on the symbolism and the setup. Thanks for reading, thanks for looking, and enjoy!

-Sam

Awesome as always!  I think it's cool that you made Nathan the Sun.  He's always struck me as a sun god.  All the symbols are well thought out and very fitting.

I love the music, too! I also appreciate the effort that goes into the animation- not something you see a lot of, anymore. On top of that, the show's scathing satirical notes just totally send me over the edge. Sometimes I can laugh at one joke for days, just because I didn't see it coming.

As far as characters? I think my gallery speaks to my favorite: Charles Foster Offdensen! He's groovy. :) Second fiddle to Charles has to be Pickles AND Nathan, though I am very partial to the antagonistic vibe from General Crozier. I also really liked MMA until...you know...

Aww, thank you so much! But don't envy me. I have a sprained wrist from something silly that happened. Of course it would be my drawing hand that hurts! So I made myself hurt much worse by drawing all this.

I've had this sketched and partially inked since October. Patience? Hardly! The final product took less than 3 hours to finish.

You know, I might put up a tutorial...if you're interested. I'll probably screenshot my work with the next card as I go.

Also... :glomp: I've missed you!!!! So don't be done! Pals around ons the interwebs with me!

Aw babe don't draw with a sprained wrist >:[
But I understand the sentiment, I played football with a broken ankle. Same shit. It hurt, but, well, I was addicted and still am. I needed it.
I want to learn your style. My realism style is blurry and just terrible. No.
I missed you too :iconletmehugyouplz: :)
I will pals around! Many pals! Yay!
Ummm.... just so you know, though, there's a thing you should know about me.
I'm not sure how you'll react to it, but I'll note you. It's important and I don't want you to not know and then be like "OH FUCK girl y u no told me". Because you with your perfect grammar would say that.

lmao, I do occasionally use text talk, jus so u kno. I'll check my messages!

Meh. My style came from copycatting other artists' styles while I was learning the basics of drawing, and then combining all of that into one big style of my own! Of course I try to get very, very close to the show's outlines and shapes, with my own shading, in the tarot cards. But otherwise, my style is very light-handed and, although it's very American cartoon, I have a heaaaavy background in anime, which is where a lot of my eye work and hair work came from. The best advice I have is to actually do those "I can draw..." sketch tutorial things for various characters, and to check out sketch tutorials on youtube.

Copycatting yo.
I copycat off ZarnitZoey . Because her arts.
Mhm.
Yup.
I did make a lineart piece here:
th03.deviantart.net/fs71/200H/…

ha lel no his eyes :iconimdeadplz:
When I have someone to do it for, or some other reason to do a good job, I give much more of myself. Then I actually spend more than five minutes on a piece that's more than badly executed lineart with crooked eyes. I may or may not fix this, depends on my finals scores.
I want to go to Zürich and study there. Mostly for the Linguistics, but Biochemistry is something I'd do aswell.

Hey, that's pretty good! But I understand the giving bit. That's why I go so, so long without writing or drawing- sometimes, I just don't have the passion I have at other times. It just...get sapped away by all my stress. Those are the days where I get what I need to do done on autopilot, and then head straight for the punching bag, or maybe just my bed with a cup of raspberry tea and my Norah Jones albums. Some would say I'm depressed, but I'm not- I'm not always happy, granted, but I just think. A LOT. About everything. Sometimes, I think so much and worry over the same thing for days that I just find myself unable to give any attention to anything else. It's a double edged sword, being a scenario-based thinker. It can be a gift, and a curse.

Biochemistry?! Right on!! That's so cool! What drives you to want to pursue that? What do you want to do with an education focusing on that?

Yes, I'm thinking of Biochemistry simply because... it's always interested me, as far as as sciences go, although to be perfectly honest, sports and arts have always been my thing more. But I find Biochemistry to be very educational and interesting, and considering the fact that there are scientry jobs in abundance right now, I'd rather take that approach than a come-ci-come-ca thing in arts, where I may never even have a single customer. I figure arts can always be a hobby.

I know nothing of tarot, but the description was more than satisfactory in describing what was needed to know. And upon understanding the meaning of the elements used, I can appreciate the piece even more. Nicely done

Thank you very much! I'm glad these descriptions are more help than harm. I actually have absolutely no background in tarot- I have a couple friends who are into it, so I'm able to ask them, but mostly, I just do my research before each card, and have read a couple books on the history to familiarize myself with the lore and background. It's quite entertaining!

Excellent job! I look forward to seeing the next few pieces of the set.

I agree that this deck shouldn't be used as divination. Having Nathan (although he **can** be a nice guy) Imperialistically dominating which what should be a good card throws the whole deck off. Anyone who tries to "read" by this deck will be in a world of hurt and so will others around them....Just what Nathan would want!!!

Thanks!! I look forward to seeing them, too. I have this whole master list of what to DO, but some of the actual sketches...they're giving me grief. I have yet to figure out what, exactly, to do for Pickles's pose, but I'll start goofing around shortly, and see what comes up!

There's a pic I've seen on DA of Pickles set up to look like a saint . . . only instead of a 'beckoning' gesture, he's holding  the inside of his arm, like he just shot up.
